Progressives are secular, that is they reject the idea that there is any God who rules the affairs of humanity and who promises to to judge their lives upon their death. Progressive morality is something they make up as they go along. It is more properly a "social morality", that is what their peers find to be acceptable or objectionable. It is informed by fashion and passion.

Why progressives are running interference and apologizing for Islam has far more to do with the common enemy of both than anything else. The enemy of my enemy is my friend, but only for as long as it advances my war against our common enemy.

And who might that enemy be be? Given that Progressives have also become adept at using race as a proxy for culture and ideology, you can answer that question by looking at who is the progressive counter-party. Who is the counter-party when progressives complain about oppression of any group they champion? Who is always harming blacks, women and minorities? It is conservative Caucasian males. Who voted for Trump? And who did not?

But it goes far deeper because there are plenty of progressive Caucasian males. The end target of progressive hate is anyone who defends the vestiges of the Protestants who founded this country. Their values reflect those found in the Bible, even though few conservatives today follow Scripture very closely, they still represent those values and that culture.

And if any religion on earth is at war with the God of the Bible, it has always been Islam. So, what you are seeing in the common cause between Progressives and Islam against conservative Americans is in fact the 21st century manifestation of a proxy war between the spiritual forces behind Islam and the God of the Bible.

See for example Daniel 11:13-14.

As a side note see Daniel 12:1. Israel (and thus the 12 tribes extant today) are the only peoples on earth who have an angel watching over them. Only "princes" watch over nations outside of the tribes of Israel. And princes are not from God.

13 For the king of the north shall return, and shall set forth a multitude greater than the former, and shall certainly come after certain years with a great army and with much riches.

14 And in those times there shall many stand up against the king of the south: also the robbers of thy people shall exalt themselves to establish the vision; but they shall fall.

Biblical doctrine of the 'old testament' was, is, and remains 'descriptive' limited to actions to that time and place. Hence, there are no actions seen in current times taking place today with any clerical sanctions from 'people of the book' aka Christians &/or Jews.
On the other hand, Qu'ranic doctrine is 'prescriptive' for all time and all places, hence the identities of dar al islam/dar al harb
